CBT for Anxiety
Anxiety can affect the way you think, feel and behave. You may find yourself constantly worrying about what might happen, avoiding situations that make you uncomfortable, or struggling to switch off even when there is no immediate danger.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you understand the patterns that keep anxiety going and develop practical strategies to manage it.
At GrowCBT, we provide online CBT with BABCP-accredited therapists for adults across the UK.
Could CBT help with anxiety?
Anxiety can look different from person to person. You might experience:
-
Constant or difficult-to-control worry
-
Racing or intrusive thoughts
-
Feeling on edge or unable to relax
-
Difficulty sleeping
-
Physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating or a tight chest
-
Avoiding places, situations or activities because they make you anxious
-
Repeatedly seeking reassurance
-
Worrying about your health, relationships, work or the future
-
Feeling that something bad is going to happen
-
Difficulty concentrating because your mind feels overwhelmed
You don't necessarily need to have a diagnosed anxiety disorder to benefit from CBT. If anxiety is affecting your everyday life, relationships, work or wellbeing, therapy may be worth considering.
How can CBT help anxiety?
CBT looks at the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviour.
When we feel anxious, it is common to fall into patterns such as avoidance, reassurance seeking or repeatedly checking for danger. These behaviours can provide short-term relief but may unintentionally reinforce anxiety over time.
CBT helps you identify these patterns and gradually develop different ways of responding.
Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to understand what is happening, identify the patterns that may be maintaining your anxiety and practise strategies that can help you make meaningful changes.
What happens in CBT for anxiety?
Your first sessions will focus on understanding what you are experiencing and what you would like to change.
Together, you and your therapist may explore:
-
What triggers your anxiety
-
The thoughts and predictions that occur when you feel anxious
-
How you respond to anxious thoughts and feelings
-
Avoidance and reassurance-seeking behaviours
-
How anxiety affects your everyday life
-
Practical strategies that could help you respond differently
CBT is collaborative and practical. You will usually have opportunities to practise what you discuss between sessions so that the changes you make can become part of everyday life.
